The LBTEK Quick Liquid Crystal Variable Retarder (QLCVR) is based on nematic liquid crystal and ITO glass materials, using an anti-parallel liquid crystal cell design, mounted in a mechanical housing with wiring. With polyimide layer rubbing alignment, the liquid crystal molecules’ fast-axis orientation is kept uniform across the entire element plane. By applying an external AC voltage (DC voltage must not be applied), the retardance can be flexibly tuned. Thanks to its tunable retardance feature, the LBTEK QLCVR has two typical applications: when used as a polarization modulator, the incident linear polarization should be oriented at 45° to the fast axis for the widest tuning range; when used as a pure phase retarder, the polarization should be aligned at 0° to the fast axis. Because the tuning is electronic and does not rely on any mechanical movement, the device provides broadband compatibility, wide operating temperature range, and excellent retardance uniformity. Compared to standard LCVRs, the QLCVR offers a significantly faster response speed, making it well-suited for applications requiring rapid polarization or phase modulation. LBTEK offers QLCVRs for operating wavelength ranges of 400–700 nm, 700–1100 nm, and 1100–1700 nm, with clear aperture options of Ø10 mm and Ø20 mm, and retardance tuning ranges available in half-wave, full-wave, and multi-wave versions.
The LBTEK 1-inch full-wave quick liquid crystal variable retarder is coated with anti-reflection coatings for the 400–700 nm, 700–1100 nm, or 1100–1700 nm wavelength ranges. Under the control of an external AC voltage (DC voltage must not be applied), it allows flexible retardance tuning from approximately 100 nm to λ. It features a clear aperture of Ø10 mm, is mounted in a mechanical housing with wiring, and is compatible with Ø1-inch optical component mounts. The housing is clearly marked with the fast-axis direction of the quick LCVR to facilitate optical alignment.
