The LBTEK Liquid Crystal Variable Retarder (LCVR) is built on nematic liquid crystal and ITO glass materials, using an anti-parallel liquid crystal cell design. It is mounted in a mechanical housing with wiring and is available in two versions: uncompensated and retardance-compensated. With the aid of polyimide layer rubbing alignment, the liquid crystal molecules’ fast-axis orientation is kept uniform across the entire element plane. By applying an external AC voltage (DC voltage must not be applied), the uncompensated liquid crystal cell can flexibly tune the retardance from several tens of nanometers up to λ/2, while the compensated version allows adjustment over a full 0 to λ/2 range.
Thanks to its tunable retardance feature, the LBTEK LCVR has two typical applications: when used as a polarization modulator, the incident linear polarization should be oriented at 45° to the LCVR’s fast axis to achieve the widest modulation range; when used as a pure phase retarder, the incident polarization should be aligned at 0° to the fast axis. Because its retardance tuning is purely electronic and does not rely on mechanical components, the device features fast response time, broadband wavelength compatibility, excellent retardance uniformity, and a wide operating temperature range. LBTEK offers standard LCVR products for wavelength ranges of 400–700 nm, 700–1100 nm, and 1100–1700 nm, in both compensated and uncompensated versions, with clear aperture options of Ø10 mm and Ø20 mm.
The LBTEK 2-inch half-wave liquid crystal variable retarder is coated with corresponding anti-reflection coatings for the 400–700 nm, 700–1100 nm, or 1100–1650 nm wavelength ranges. Under the control of an external AC voltage (DC voltage must not be applied), it enables flexible retardance tuning from approximately 60 nm–λ/2 or 100 nm–λ/2. It features a clear aperture of Ø20 mm, is mounted in a mechanical housing with wiring, and is compatible with Ø2-inch optical component mounts. The housing is also marked with the fast-axis direction of the retarder for convenient optical alignment.
