A digital micromirror device (DMD) spatial light modulator is an optical micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) with electronic input and optical output. Its core component is the digital micromirror device, which functions as both an optical semiconductor module and a MEMS chip. Each micromirror can independently tilt ±12° around its hinge axis. The DMD chip operates based on digital signals transmitted from the front-end circuitry to the CMOS chip, which control the rotation angle of each micromirror. The tilt of each mirror is individually driven by binary information from the underlying CMOS control circuitry and reset signals, enabling precise digital modulation of the optical field. As a result, light incident on the micromirrors can be selectively reflected onto the imaging plane to form images.
Because DMD micromirrors use aluminum-coated reflective surfaces that absorb almost no energy and are controlled by advanced CMOS technology, they achieve much higher modulation speed, precision, energy efficiency, and overall performance compared to other spatial light modulators. LBTEK offers ultra-high-speed DMD spatial light modulators with various resolutions, operating wavelengths, and onboard memory capacities. They are widely used in spectral analysis, maskless lithography, 3D measurement, naked-eye 3D display, holographic imaging, compressive sensing, biological microscopy, SLA 3D printing, and machine vision.
The ultra-high-speed DMD spatial light modulators provided by LBTEK feature USB 3.0 high-speed image transmission and display, as well as internal and external trigger synchronization functions. They support high-speed display of binary images, 8-bit grayscale images, and 16-bit grayscale images — with up to 16 configurable grayscale levels — at resolutions of 1024×768, 1280×800, or 1080P (1920×1080). They also support large-capacity image storage, with 16 GB, 2 TB, and 3 TB options available. Users can freely download the operating software, which is supplied together with a user manual for easy setup and operation.
