LBTEK Planar Cylindrical Lens (PB Cylindrical Lens, PBCL) is fabricated from N-BK7 glass substrates and liquid crystal polymer (LCP) material in a “front and rear glass substrates + central LCP functional layer” sandwich structure. Within the LCP layer, the fast-axis orientation of the liquid crystal molecules follows a continuous gradient distribution along the x-axis with gradually decreasing periodicity. The device provides a uniform λ/2 retardation across the entire aperture, making it a single-wavelength component. The planar cylindrical lens exhibits polarization-dependent optical characteristics. By controlling the polarization state of the incident light, the energy distribution between converging and diverging spots can be tuned. Compared with conventional cylindrical lenses, the planar cylindrical lens can therefore function both as a converging lens and as a diverging lens.
As a flat-plate diffractive element, the lens follows the diffraction relation sinθ = λ/p, where θ is the diffraction angle, λ is the design wavelength, and p is the radial period. The continuously varying periodic structure eliminates spherical aberration, ensuring that all rays passing through different positions along the x-axis converge at the same point on the axis. The resulting focused spot forms a vertical line perpendicular to the x-axis, with a length equal to the original beam diameter. LBTEK offers standard planar cylindrical lenses with a clear aperture of Ø21.5 mm, design wavelengths of 532 nm, 633 nm, and 1064 nm, and focal lengths of 50 mm and 100 mm.
LBTEK Planar Cylindrical Lens enables beam convergence or divergence in a single direction. Its diffractive effect is designed for a single wavelength, providing uniform half-wave retardation across the entire clear aperture and free of spherical aberration. The lens is fabricated on N-BK7 windows with a double-substrate structure and a total thickness of 3.2 mm. LBTEK also offers customization for specific wavelengths, focal lengths, and dimensions to meet diverse application requirements.
