The fiber pigtail ferrule consists of an optical fiber, a precision glass capillary tube, and adhesive for fixation. A two-component thermosetting epoxy adhesive is typically used due to its low thermal expansion coefficient and high bonding strength. Additionally, a layer of soft adhesive is applied at the tail end where the fiber contacts the capillary to protect the fiber from movement-induced breakage.
The 8° angled end-face ferrule, when used with lenses that also have an 8° angled interface, can effectively deflect reflected light away from the fiber core due to the angled surface. This prevents back-reflected light from coupling back into the input fiber core, resulting in significantly improved return loss performance compared to 0° end-face ferrules.
This makes it especially suitable for applications that are sensitive to back-reflection.
