The fiber pigtail ferrule consists of an optical fiber, a precision glass capillary tube, and adhesive for fixation. A two-component thermosetting epoxy adhesive is typically used due to its low thermal expansion coefficient and high bonding strength. Additionally, a layer of soft adhesive is applied at the tail end where the fiber contacts the capillary tube to protect the fiber from breakage caused by mechanical stress or vibration.
The 0° polished end-face design minimizes beam deviation from the optical axis when paired with collimating lenses of the same 0° end-face specification, making it ideal for precise alignment and fiber coupling setups.
Although the end face is coated with an anti-reflection (AR) coating, the flat surface may still produce some back reflection. Therefore, for applications with stringent return loss requirements, an 8° angled end-face pigtail is recommended instead.
