LBTEK Shear Interferometer consists of a wedge prism placed at a 45° angle and an observation plate, where the wedge prism is made of UV Fused Silica and the observation plate is a scattering plate with a reference line engraved in the middle. The wedge angle of each prism is optimized for the beam size it can measure, and the specific angle can be found in the product specifications. The scattering plate is used to observe the interference fringes generated by the Fresnel reflections from both surfaces of the wedge prism. The intensity of the fringes is maximized when the polarization direction of the incident beam is perpendicular to the plane formed by the incident light and the normal of the shear plate.
It is important to note that interference fringes can only be observed when the coherence length of the laser beam is greater than the optical path difference caused by the wedge prism. The approximate optical path difference (ΔOPL) generated by the wedge prism can be found in the product specifications for each model.
